The European Broadcasting Union's general assembly in Limassol, Cyprus, explores the impact of artificial intelligence on public service media and journalism.

"The two-day general assembly of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) in Limassol, Cyprus, brought together public radio and television stations from across Europe to discuss the critical role of public service media in the face of strong polarization and the significant impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the world of communication.

In attendance was Vatican Radio, represented by Alessandro Gisotti, deputy editorial director of the Vatican Dicastery for Communication. The assembly, opened by the President of the Cypriot Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, focused on the potential benefits and risks of AI in information and journalism.

EBU's general director, Noel Curran, emphasized the need to stay updated on technological transformation processes, highlighting the importance of balancing the benefits of AI with the need to safeguard the values of information, particularly in the search for truth. A report on the credibility of journalism in the time of AI was presented, reiterating the irreplaceable task of information to tell the facts and stories of people and communities.

The assembly also discussed the critical issue of privacy and databases, which can pose a risk to people's freedom if not used correctly and regulated. Former European Commission President José Manuel Barroso joined the discussion, exploring the challenges posed to public service media by the emergence of populist political groups in recent European elections.

Delphine Ernotte, head of France Télévisions, was confirmed as EBU president for another two-year term, with the next plenary scheduled for Lausanne, Switzerland, in December 2024.
