AI & Facial Recognition Boost India's Rail Security

Published Date: 21/07/2024

Indian Railways is integrating AI-powered facial recognition systems into its stations, creating a vast biometric surveillance network to ensure passenger safety.

"India's massive rail network is undergoing a significant transformation with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and facial recognition systems. This move is part of a growing biometrics and surveillance market, which experts predict will be worth over $15 billion within the next five years.

IDIS Global, a South Korean video surveillance manufacturer, is providing Indian Railways with a 4K camera system equipped with integrated AI video analytics and facial recognition technology from Herta Security. The first phase of this major technology update saw cameras installed across hundreds of platforms in 230 high-traffic stations across the country's eastern region in May 2024.

Herta Security's facial recognition algorithms provide real-time identification and alerts to persons-of-interest. IDIS's configurable deep learning analytics system analyzes motion, loitering, abandoned object detection, and line crossing. With a monitoring center installed at every fifth station along the network, railway authorities have a connected ecosystem of command and control hubs to monitor, analyze data, and respond to crisis events.

Moreover, the system's video management platform offers mobile surveillance through the IDIS Mobile Plus app, allowing image and video captured from smartphones to be fed into the system.

Indian Railways, which carries an estimated 9.5 million passengers daily, aims to provide a secure foundation for growth and development plans. The Railway Protection Force now has full confidence that they are operating 230 of the safest and most secure stations, resulting in two more regions being identified for upgrade.

In addition to Indian Railways, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is also deploying AI to improve efficiency and crowd management. Plans include the use of AI for driverless trains, amped up facial recognition, and CCTV camera surveillance.

The integration of AI and facial recognition systems is a significant step towards enhancing security and passenger safety in India's rail network. As the network continues to expand and modernize, the use of cutting-edge technology will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of rail operations.
