Scotland’s digital identity service, ScotAccount, has officially entered its public beta phase. This milestone allows a larger group of users to test the government service, which aims to simplify and secure access to public services and benefits.
The service enables users to verify their identity through the app by using a photo ID. For those without a photographic ID, the platform offers an alternative method of verification through security questions. Additionally, ScotAccount is exploring vouching as another verification method, as announced by the team on Wednesday.
During the early stages of the beta, the team worked closely with a small group of service providers to test functionality, identify issues, and gather targeted feedback. To date, over 1,000 people have participated in user research, helping to shape a service that caters to a wide range of needs.
ScotAccount is also transitioning from relying on third-party software suppliers to an in-house team. This move is expected to enhance the platform's flexibility and responsiveness to user needs.
The platform was launched in 2023 in collaboration with Disclosure Scotland, initially allowing employers to verify criminal records and other important information. Since then, ScotAccount has expanded its scope to include access to other public services such as the Witness Gateway, which enables witnesses to access case information online.
ScotAccount can also be used for debt management, registering firms that sell tobacco products and operate funeral services, and managing finance raised against “moveable assets” as well as stocks and shares. The initiative has invited other public service organizations to explore and integrate with the project.
Last year, ScotAccount announced it was examining interoperability with GOV.UK One Login. This would allow users of both Scottish and UK public services to benefit from a seamless experience, further enhancing the platform's utility and reach.Â
