Asha workers and group promoters in Maharashtra to receive Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia in case of accidental death and Rs 5 lakh in case of disability.

"In a significant move, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 10 lakh for Asha workers and group promoters in the event of accidental death. Additionally, they will receive Rs 5 lakh in case of disability due to an accident. This decision was made in a cabinet meeting held at Mantralaya on Tuesday.

The state government has sanctioned a fund of approximately Rs 1.05 crore per year for this purpose, which will be implemented from April 1, 2024. There are currently around 75,578 Asha workers and 3,622 group promoters working in Maharashtra, who are responsible for providing essential health services across the state.

These workers have played a crucial role in the health department, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where they worked tirelessly to distribute polio doses to children in remote areas. Despite their hard work, they have been seeking salary increases, provident fund, and appointments to vacant posts, but the government has only made hollow promises to them until now.

The decision to provide ex-gratia amounts is a welcome move, as it will provide financial assistance to the families of these workers in case of accidental death or disability. It is a recognition of their valuable services to the state's healthcare system.
