Amadeus, a renowned travel technology company, is making significant strides in the travel industry with the adoption of digital ID and biometric technologies. These advancements aim to improve traveler journeys through airports, making the travel experience more seamless and secure.
Malaysia Airlines is the first in South-East Asia to digitalize travel identity documents, including biometric passports. This initiative allows passengers to use these documents throughout their travel journey, simplifying the process at various touchpoints such as check-in, bag drop, security, and boarding. The airline is deploying Amadeus Travel Ready, a platform that aligns with IATA’s One ID initiative, to streamline passenger journeys with advanced data-sharing and biometrics.
Clarence Lee Chin Ken, Chief Digital Officer of Malaysia Aviation Group, highlights the benefits of this digitalization. “Allowing passengers to upload and verify their travel documents ahead of time during online check-in will reduce airport congestion. More importantly, we are laying the foundation for a fully biometric, seamless journey in the future.”
Javier Laforgue, EVP of Amadeus’ travel unit and MD for Asia Pacific, adds, “As a first mover in the region with Amadeus Travel Ready, Malaysia Airlines will benefit from advanced biometric enrolment capabilities, ensuring a seamless and secure travel experience for its customers. This partnership is just one example of how Amadeus can support the travel industry with innovative, traveler-centric initiatives that enhance passenger convenience and security.”
In addition to Malaysia Airlines, two new airlines are also signing up for Amadeus’ digital aviation platforms. Riyadh Air, Saudi Arabia’s new digital-first carrier, has signed a global distribution agreement with Amadeus. This strategic partnership provides Riyadh Air access to a global network of travel technology suppliers as the airline prepares to begin flying this October. The airline aims to expand its network to over 100 destinations by 2030, with a focus on personalized sales capabilities and potential biometrics deployments.
Vietnam’s Sun PhuQuoc Airways is also adopting several software solutions from Amadeus to support its full-service operations and customer experience. The airline is integrating the Altéa Passenger Service System (PSS), which manages booking, ticketing, inventory, departure control, and customer accounts. Additionally, it will use Amadeus Revenue Accounting and the company’s SkyWORKS, a flight schedule editor.
These new deals continue a robust growth period for Amadeus. The company reported a 6.8 percent increase in its top line in the first half of fiscal 2025, reaching 3.26 billion euros (approximately US$3.81 billion). Increases in profit and adjusted profit were 12.3 percent and 8.5 percent, respectively. Amadeus has also announced new customers across all business lines and major research and development investments. Subsidiary Vision-Box is contributing to this growth with an agreement to provide biometrics for Miami’s massive new cruise terminal.
Amadeus is also in the midst of a €1.3 billion share repurchase program, further solidifying its position in the travel technology market. These initiatives and partnerships underscore Amadeus’ commitment to innovation and improving the travel experience for passengers globally.Â
